Organising Your Makeup Collection - A Clutter Free Life

13/04/2017

When it comes to decluttering your life, well that can seem very overwhelming. But decluttering your makeup collection, that seems more manageable, don't you think?

In this new series, A Clutter Free Life, I will be teaching you ways to declutter and organize your home, blog and soul. I will focus on fashion, beauty, blogging and health aspects of your life, sound familiar? That's because these are Beauty Spot's core ideas.

There will be more content and exclusive posts in my Resource Library that you can get access to below. There you will also find my eBook, content upgrades, discount codes and more. It's full of amazing goodies and, the best part, it's FREE! I will be posting 3 posts on the blog then another 3 to the Resource Library, click below to get access to these.

In this post I will provide you with strategies and questions that will help you to tidy and organize your makeup collection as well as keep it that way, which is, in my experience, one of the hardest things to do.

Now I am a huge makeup addict and collector myself so I have had my fair share of "where is this brush hiding?" moments. In these moments I often wished I had an organised system or storage for my makeup but ultimately never got around to it. That is until now. It is actually not as hard as it may seem and with the right advice and guidance you can declutter your collection!

Step 1:
The first thing to do is take it all out. Whether it is in drawers, on a shelf, even in boxes, it all must be out in the open. Pretty scary, right? Making more of a mess than you started with, when the entire idea is to organise! But don't worry, all in good time young grasshopper.

Step 2:
Expiry dates... the two dreaded words. I know what you're thinking, "those don't really matter" but trust me, they do. Without going into too much gory detail, the effects that expired makeup can have on your face, eyes or lips, is actually quite harmful, not to mention gross. So as hard as it may seems, you have to say goodbye and let go of those old products.

Step 3:
Most people would say that now you need to give away what you don't like or use. But I'm going to assume that, if you're like me, you love all your makeup and unless utterly necessary, you couldn't imagine parting ways with it. So step three for me is finding things to store your makeup in.
This is where you can get your creative juices flowing. I scoured cheap stores such as Kmart, Target and eBay to find the very best storage solutions. What I uncovered however, was that anything from a tray to a candle holder to a plant pot could actually be transformed into the perfect makeup storage item. In the picture above I used candle holders, trinket bowls and jars. Along with a tray for all my face products (not pictured).

Step 4:
Stop buying what you don't need! I'm not saying to go cold turkey or anything, but having the mindset that it's alright to buy a lipstick every time you hit the mall not only means you're cluttering and taking up space, but it's also setting you back quite a bit financially. Like the saying goes, take care of the pennies and the pound will take care of themselves.

Step 5:
This is potentially the hardest step, keeping it organised. Don't you just hate it when you clean your room and what seems like immediately after it's messy again. Unless you have some evil fairies come into your room and trash the place when you're gone, chances are it is because you are being lazy. Whenever you use your makeup or add/remove from the collection, make sure it looks just as perfect when you leave as when you arrived. This means that you won't have to do a major clean out every week or so.

There you have it, 5 steps to a clutter-free, organised makeup collection! I think you definitely deserve a pat on the back at this point because you are one step closer to a clutter free life.
